It was either Popular Science or Popular Mechanics that had an article a few months back about the world running out of oil. The world has just passed the peak of oil production and current estimates suggest the vast majority of oil has been discovered. Therefore, at our current rate of consumption (which is excessive), there will be serious shortages of oil in 40-50 years. This overconsumption will worsen as third world countries become more industrialized. An article in Home Power magazine about a year ago reached the same conclusion as PS/PM. When you look at history, humanity has always adapted and utilized a new energy source (wood, coal, gas). We will adapt when oil runs out. The trouble is that transitions are always painful - particularly for people with limited resources. My hope is that we as a society look far enough forward in time and adapt to shortages of oil so that the pain of conversion is limited. I have no doomsday fear that the world will end when the oil is finished. I just worry about those who will suffer from the conversion. It would be nice though to utilize a fuel source that is renewable and available in our country. I hate sending much of the US's wealth to the Middle East for their precious black goo.
