Bent push rod on an A

My boss at school ask me to take a look at his tractor. It was making a loud clicking type sound. Took a look and this is what we found? My question is do all the push rods need replaced? How involved will this be? And at what type of cost to the owner? I appreciate the help.

check the valve to see if it is sticking. if everything is ok you can pull the rocker shaft off (couple bolts) replace the bad push rod and just re-set all the tappets.

Take it out , and hammer it straight again , check it on a steel plate or sheet of plywood. Reinstall and reset the valve lash on all the valves , others may be tight. My old Ford truck has done this twice , I just straightened 'em...

How exactly would one set the clearances on the valves? I am a complete rookie at engine work? I have the shop manual. Will I need feeler gauges? Thanks

Yes, you will need feeler guages. And yes, the shop manual should outline the lash procedure. If it does not have it, post here, and I will be happy to walk you through it.

Straightening a bent push rod works in a pinch, but once they bend they are apt to bend again. I agree, that a stuck or sticky valve caused the issue. so, make sure you have good oil flow to the valve train. I would replace the push rod, and CIH should have them.

Nah, they are not prone to bending again. I straightened out 2 pushrods on my 1940 H after I bought it 12 years ago, and just this spring I had the head off for some valve work and those pushrods are all nice and straight. This H gets about 1 to 2 hours of mowing time each week during the growing season.

Rusty, I have had both experiences. Have had them run forever and have had them rebend in the same place. It all depends upon how good a job you do in straightening them.

So, I don't totally disagree with you, but I also don't totally agree.
